I hadn't heard anything about this, but the cover caught my eye, and the premise drew me in. (Just ask Josh, I'm a sucker for anything involving mystic warriors, monks, priests, renegade cults, assassins with barcode tattoos on the back of their heads....)
Library Journal described it as Ender's Game meets the Inquisition, which is a fair summation but doesn't capture how quickly the book sucks you into this strange and terrifying world. And the writing is excellent--a sample tidbit:
Indeed, it was said that it was imposible to understand the Materazzi's willingness to die in battle until you had met one of their wives.
I started the book yesterday and am already halfway through. And lucky for me, the sequel is out next month.
